Steel manufacturer JSW Steel has partnered with Carbon Iceland International and non-profit consultancy Bharatia to develop a 300,000-ton-per-annum green methanol plant in India, according to a regulatory filing Monday.
The project will produce e-methanol by converting carbon dioxide emissions from JSW Steel's operations in Raigad, Maharashtra, and it will use of green hydrogen from renewable energy sources, the document stated.
"The collaboration seeks to establish a scalable carbon capture and utilization pathway for the steel sector," JSW Steel said, as India pursues its energy transition and industrial decarbonization objectives.
The memorandum of understanding, signed by the three companies during the third India-Nordic Summit in Norway, also outlines a phased development pathway towards commercial-scale implementation of the project.
Under the agreement, Carbon Iceland will serve as the technology project developer, while non-profit foundation Bharatia will support project development and establishment of financing pathways.
