By

Japanese equities opened lower on Monday following confirmation that Tokyo and Washington conducted their first coordinated currency market intervention in over a decade.

The Nikkei 225 fell 527.1 points or 0.8% to open at 63,834.95.

Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama disclosed that authorities stepped in on Friday to counter the yen's excessive volatility and decline in recent months, while signalling readiness for further action if needed.

Elsewhere, US President Donald Trump's confirmation of imminent US-Iran negotiations lifted sentiment amid hopes for a Strait of Hormuz solution. Brent crude fell to about $83 per barrel.
