International Transactions in Securities Generate Net Inflow in Canada's Economy in July

By

International securities transactions resulted in a net CA$51.3 billion inflow into the Canadian economy in July, Statistics Canada said Thursday.

Canadian investors cut their international securities holdings by CA$30.6 billion, primarily by selling US equities and, to a lesser extent, US government bonds, the agency said.

International investors purchased CA$20.7 billion of Canadian securities in July, bringing total investment since January to CA$178.9 billion, StatsCan added.

The monthly inflow was driven primarily by strong demand for federal government bonds and, to a lesser extent, Canadian equities, while a sell-off in money market instruments partially offset the overall inflow.

International investors also bought CA$7.2 billion of Canadian equities in July, marking their largest monthly investment in Canadian shares so far this year.
