Ineos is halting production at its three world-scale acetyls plants in the UK, which supply essential raw materials for European manufacturing, because regional natural gas prices have surged, the company said on Tuesday.
With European natural gas prices soaring to 12 times US levels and now eight times more expensive than coal-based production in China, Ineos stated it can no longer absorb the cost disadvantage.
Two units have already ceased production and the third will close within days, it said. Natural gas serves both as an energy source and a core feedstock in these production processes.
European natural gas futures rallied on Tuesday after falling to a two-week low during the previous session, as tensions and uncertainties lingered despite signs of diplomatic progress between the US and Iran.
