The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved agreements supporting Indiana-based utility NiSource Inc.'s partnership with Amazon to serve planned data center development in northern Indiana, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
On June 17, the IURC approved a settlement agreement, which NiSource described as a special contract with Amazon and a related power purchase agreement. In a separate order, the commission also approved NiSource's proposed generation resources, including combined-cycle natural gas turbines and battery energy storage systems.
According to NiSource, the approved framework is designed to ensure that data center customers bear the costs of the generation and transmission infrastructure needed to serve their facilities. The company said the structure will support affordability, reliability, and long-term value for existing customers of its Northern Indiana Public Service Co. utility.
NiSource estimates that its broader data center strategy could generate approximately $1.4 billion in savings for existing customers by adding new large electric loads.
The settlement also includes support for expedited procedural schedules for future agreements, a move the company said will enhance speed-to-market for major projects.
"As data center demand continues to grow across our service territory, we are helping to ensure that new large-load customers support the infrastructure needed to serve them while existing customers benefit through bill credits as those customers ramp," NiSource President and Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Yates said.
