India has crossed 300 gigawatts of non-fossil power capacity, marking a major step toward its 2030 clean-energy target and strengthening its push for energy independence, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said Sunday.
As of July 31, total non-fossil capacity stood at 300.50 GW, taking India past 60% of its 500 GW capacity target for 2030.
Solar accounted for 164.59 GW of capacity, while wind contributed 58.14 GW and large and small hydro projects added 57.24 GW. Bio-power stood at 11.75 GW and nuclear at 8.78 GW.
Non-fossil sources now represent over 54% of India's total electricity generation capacity, which stands at around 552 GW, according to the ministry.
Solar capacity has grown to about 165 GW from 2.8 GW in 2014, while wind capacity has risen to more than 58 GW from 21 GW over the same period.
India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity during 2025-26, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind capacity, the ministry said.
Renewable electricity generation increased to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26 from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15, reflecting the rapid expansion of clean-energy capacity.
The government has supported domestic manufacturing through measures including the Production Linked Incentive scheme, while capacity under the approved list of models and manufacturers for solar photovoltaic modules has exceeded 200 GW from 2.3 GW in 2014.
The ministry said the clean-energy transition is strengthening India's industrial competitiveness, energy independence and economic resilience while supporting its goal of building a more self-reliant energy ecosystem.
Through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the ministry is also pursuing industrial decarbonization and positioning India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
