Indian energy minister Hardeep Singh Puri confirmed via an X post on Thursday that he met Iranian oil minister Mohsen Paknejad at the BRICS energy ministers' meeting in Gurugram to explore bilateral energy cooperation.
The engagement signals India's potential intention to restore historical crude oil trade ties with Tehran, which were entirely halted in 2019 following the enforcement of stringent US sanctions.
"We explored opportunities to cooperate in the energy sector," the Indian minister posted.
The diplomatic revival comes at a crucial market turning point, as Washington recently opened a conditional window for Iranian oil exports through a historic sanctions rollback and an active 60-day US-Iran waiver agreement negotiated in Switzerland.
