A consortium comprising Hitachi (TYO:6501) and Toshiba has shipped the first 12-car N700ST trainset to Taiwan, the first delivery under a 12-trainset (144-car) order placed by Taiwan High Speed Rail (TPE:2633) in May 2023, according to a statement on Thursday.
All 12 trainsets are scheduled to enter commercial service by the end of 2028 on the Taipei-Kaohsiung corridor, increasing peak passenger capacity by about 25%.
Based on Japan's N700S Shinkansen, the N700ST trains feature energy-efficient silicon carbide traction systems and battery backup systems that enable operation during power outages.
