High Flood and Hurricane Risks Seen For Municipal Bond Offerings This Week

Multiple municipal bond offerings this week have a strong exposure to climate risk, specifically to floods and hurricanes, according to ICE Climate Data.

A $17 million offering from Oceanside Union Free School District, New York, records a flood risk score of 3.7 out of 5.0, ICE reports.

Locations with a component Physical Climate Risk Score of 2.0 or higher out of 5.0 indicate high physical climate risk due to hurricane, flooding, or wildfire events.

A $25 million bond deal from Naples, Florida, has a hurricane risk score of 4.0 out of 5.0 on ICE's scale, while a $25 million tranche from Iberia Parish School District, Louisiana, records an acute physical risk score of 2.9.

A $5 million offering from Brazoria County MUD No. 55 in Texas, records a combined physical risk score of 3.6, and a $31 million deal from Weld County School District No. RE-8, Colorado, has a combined physical risk score of 2.4 due to their proximity to weather-related events, according to ICE Climate Data.

US Dollar Weakens Against The Loonie as Hostilities Resumes Between The US and Iran

The US dollar weakened against its Canadian counterpart Monday afternoon as hostilities resumed between the United States and Iran.The greenback was down 0.4% to C$1.3857 on last look.West Texas Intermediate October crude oil futures, the US benchmark, jumped 2.7% to $85.65 per barrel. October Brent oil futures, the international benchmark, rose 2.5% to $90.33 per barrel.Comex gold December futures slipped 1% to $4,488.70 per ounce, as expectations increase that the US Federal Reserve will raise interest rates.US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that US growth goals include ending the Iran war behind. "We are going to get to the other side of this Iran conflict." Bessent also claimed the US bond market in August outperformed every other major bond market.Bessent and Federal Reserve chair Kevin Wash also spoke at the G20 finance ministers meeting in North Carolina.
