Hershey Faces Mars-Led Market Shares Losses, With Tougher Comparison Seen Ahead, RBC Says

Hershey (HSY) faces continued market share pressure, as Mars and other competitors are winning on the innovation front, while comparisons are likely to get tougher in the second half of the year, RBC Capital Markets said Friday.

In the first half, Hershey's rivals "out innovated" the chocolate maker, with Mars being the main gainer in chocolate candy on both a dollar and volume basis amid growing price gaps and other factors, RBC Co-Head of Global Consumer and Retail Research Nik Modi said in a note to clients.

In the second quarter in particular, Hershey lost about 115 basis points of dollar share and 190 basis points of volume share in the candy aisle, compared with a year earlier. Mars gained 130 basis points of dollar share and 220 basis points of volume share in the same period, according to RBC.

"We believe that the recent share losses are attributable to Hershey (versus) Mars price gaps, low repeats for innovation and inability to scale more premium versions of their largest brands," Modi said.

Retained shopper rates for Hershey's newly launched new products are "significantly below" those of successful ones, with Reese's Oreo collaboration being an outlier, RBC said, citing Numerator Insights data.

"This creates a very difficult comparison starting in (the third quarter)," Modi wrote. "While Hershey has flagged an innovation-packed (second-half), historical repeat rate data suggests new launches alone may not be enough to offset the Reese's Oreo lap."

RBC lowered its price target on the Hershey stock to $206 from $212 and reiterated its sector perform rating.

Citing its evaluation of recent share dynamics, RBC cut its North America confection outlook for 2027 and beyond. "We remain below the company's 2027 (earnings-per-share) algorithm given our view that (Hershey) will need to increase reinvestment to address current share losses," Modi said.

The company's shares were down 0.9% in Friday afternoon trade. The stock has gained 2.6% in value so far this year.

RBC also blamed Hershey's market share woes to the K-shaped economy. A K-shaped economy describes a situation where different parts of the economy perform in sharply diverging ways.

"Based on our investor discussions, it seems that market share trends have now become the central (key performance indicator) that will likely govern (Hershey's) relative stock price performance," Modi wrote.

Late last month, the company lifted the bottom end of its full-year growth guidance range after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter results amid "resilient" demand.

NetEase's Quarterly Profit Slumps as Investment Hit Mars Gaming Gains

NetEase (HKG:9999) reported a double-digit drop in second-quarter attributable net income, as investment losses offset games-driven revenue growth.Attributable net income fell 18.8% to 6.98 billion yuan, or 12.02 yuan per share, from 8.6 billion yuan, or 14.81 yuan per share, a year earlier, the company said in a Hong Kong bourse filing on Thursday. The decline was largely due to a 2.95 billion yuan investment loss incurred during the quarter, compared with investment income of 328.4 million yuan a year earlier. The Chinese internet and video game company attributed this to a drop in the fair value of equity investments and impairment charges.Revenue, however, was up 7.9% to 30.1 billion yuan from 27.9 billion yuan, driven by a 9.7% increase in revenue from games and related value-added services. Australia's Private Sector Remains on Growth Trajectory in August Despite Cost Pressures

The Australian private sector's output grew for the third consecutive month in August as business activity increased for the fourth time in five months, buoyed by service sector expansion and a rise in new orders. The headline seasonally adjusted S&P Global Flash Australia PMI Composite Output Index posted at 52.5 in August, down slightly from 53.2 in July but remaining above the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction, the index provider said Friday. The Flash Australia Services PMI Business Activity Index came in at 52.9 for August from 53.6 in the previous month. The Flash Australia Manufacturing PMI was unchanged at 52, while the Flash Australia Manufacturing PMI Output Index fell to 49.7 from 50.3 in July.Although cost pressures intensified in August, charge inflation retreated to its least pronounced level since the start of the year. At the same time, the 12-month outlook for activity was the most optimistic since February, S&P Global said.As manufacturing output tipped into contraction, goods producers who booked lower production volumes attributed the decline to staffing-related disruptions, longer wait times on input deliveries, and cost pressures."Positively, manufacturing enjoyed its strongest injection of new work since the start of the year, although disruption to supply chains and challenges on the cost front led to a slight drop in output," said S&P Global Market Intelligence economist Eleanor Dennison. The overall volume of new orders improved for a second straight month in August, reflecting both new customer wins and a general pick-up in market conditions. Additionally, the August data showed the first signs of improvement in export performance since March amid a rebound in global demand for goods manufactured in Australia.S&P Global noted that at the composite level, employment has now increased in 19 of the last 20 months.
