US weekly electricity generation hit an all-time high of 100,996 Gigawatt-hours last week due to a severe midsummer heatwave, marking the first time the grid has crossed the 100,000 GWh threshold, according to data from the Edison Electric Institute.
This record-shattering power generation represents a 22% spike above normal weekly operating levels, EEI noted.
As per the note, major utility operators including Dominion Energy, Duke Energy, and FirstEnergy successfully maintained system stability and managed rapid load swings through extensive infrastructure interconnections.
"Meeting surging demand and ensuring the grid can withstand severe weather will require continued investment in America's energy infrastructure," said EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney.
On a yearly basis the US electric output was 2.3% higher than the last year, it added.
