German energy firm Uniper has signed a letter of interest with the developers of the Ksi Lisims LNG project in Canada for the supply of 2 million tons per annum of liquefied natural gas, the companies said in a note on Monday.
The future supply deal, to be formalized through a supply and purchase agreement, could see first deliveries as early as 2032.
Ksi Lisims LNG is a planned 12 mtpa floating export facility on the northwest coast of British Columbia, developed in partnership between the Nisga'a Nation, Rockies LNG, and Western LNG.
Uniper said the potential deal would strengthen its LNG portfolio diversification and enhance security of supply for its European markets as it continues to rebuild and expand its global gas sourcing base.
"Expanding and diversifying our LNG supply portfolio remains a key priority for Uniper," Uniper CEO Michael Lewis said. "Canada offers an attractive environment with significant gas resources, strong political stability, and reliable regulatory frameworks."
The Ksi Lisims LNG project will be powered by British Columbia's renewable hydroelectric grid, with developers targeting greenhouse gas intensity up to 90% lower than conventional LNG facilities.
Gas for the project would be supplied via the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline, linking Canada's Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin to the Pacific coast, enabling access to Asian export markets.
The developers have secured key environmental approvals, and the project has been designated a Project of National Interest by the Canadian government. Pending a final investment decision, construction could begin in early 2027.
