German equities climbed at the end of the trading week, with the blue-chip DAX index gaining 0.51% at Friday's close, as the latest euro area gross domestic product and trade data were released against the backdrop of fresh US tariff threats.
According to Eurostat's second estimate, the eurozone's GDP ticked up 0.4% in the second quarter, in line with the preliminary estimate and following the prior three-month period's zero growth. On a yearly basis, the eurozone registered 1% economic growth, matching the initial estimate and against the previous quarter's 0.5% gain.
On the trade front, the euro area recorded a trade surplus of 8.6 billion euros in June, compared with a revised trade deficit of 9 billion euros a month ago and an expected deficit of 2.2 billion euros. The rebound was attributed to solid foreign demand for chemicals, food and manufactured goods amid a larger energy deficit.
Speaking of trade news, President Donald Trump plans to hit foreign drone imports with tariffs as high as 100%, arguing the US is "too reliant" on overseas suppliers. Drone and related component manufacturers from the European Union are expected to face a 15% levy. According to the White House, the tariffs generally take effect 21 days post-signing, with duties on select components deferred for 180 days.
Alongside this escalating trade measure, geopolitical tensions are rising on another front as US officials said they are preparing to ratchet up pressure on Iran next week through a strategy of extreme economic sanctions and the sustained naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
As for corporate updates, Rheinmetall (RHM.F) rose 3.19% after securing a double-digit million-euro contract to equip Denmark's Armed Forces with its multi-ammunition softkill system. Intended for the Royal Danish Navy's Absalon- and Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates and its Weapons School, deliveries are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2027.
Meanwhile, Siemens (SIE.F) partnered with transformer voltage regulation technology company Reinhausen to co-develop and scale an up to 36-kilovolt solid-state transformer aimed at improving power efficiency for artificial intelligence data centers. The stock closed 0.02% in the green at the end of the session.
