German equities remained in the red on Thursday, with the blue-chip DAX index falling 0.61%, amid growing doubts about the chance of a US-Iran peace agreement.
Iran's Foreign Ministry submitted restart terms to Washington via Qatar, pressing for the release of its frozen assets, an end to the US blockade, and recognition of an Oman-agreed shipping route. Reinforcing this tough stance, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian told the UN General Assembly that access to the Strait of Hormuz will stay restricted until US sanctions are lifted.
"So for investors, the sense was that the two sides were still far apart, and the 12-month Brent future (+0.42%) hit a 3-month high of $80.96/bbl by the close. So it was clear that investors were still expecting a protracted period of higher oil prices," Deutsche Bank Research said in a note.
Back home, the ifo Institute noted improving business sentiment, with the business climate indicator coming in at 89.9 points in September, up from August's 88.8 points and the expected 89.1 points. The expectations indicator ticked up to 90.4 points from the revised 89 points, while the current conditions index rose to 89.5 points from 88.5 points.
On the corporate front, Delivery Hero (DHER.F) scrapped plans for co-founder Niklas Östberg to step down as chief executive officer by the end of March 2027, citing a "fundamentally changed situation" following a takeover offer from Uber (UT8.F). The German online food delivery company noted that Östberg's existing service agreement will expire on April 30, 2029. Delivery Hero lost 0.90% on Xetra, while Uber's Frankfurt-listed shares were down 0.25%.
Meanwhile, Metzler Capital Markets trimmed its price target for Hannover Re (HNR1.F) to 296 euros from 300 euros and maintained its buy rating after a model update.
"This move largely represents an update in our earnings estimates as well as in our COE estimate for Hannover Re. Our investment case is unchanged: We are confident that Hannover Re's technical results can withstand some pressure on reinsurance prices. In addition, we consider the company's technical reserves, in particular the IBNR reserves (for incurred but not [yet] reported claims), to be pretty comfortable," Metzler wrote. The German reinsurer ended the session 1.74% higher.
