The 1.6-gigawatt Nordseecluster offshore wind project on Germany's coast has delivered its first electricity to the grid, developer RWE said in a statement on Wednesday.
The project's Nordseecluster A phase, with a capacity of 600 megawatts, is scheduled to be fully connected to the grid in early 2027. Wind turbine installation is making progress, along with testing and commissioning.
Its 44 turbines will feed power into two offshore substations where it will be raised to the necessary transmission voltage. From that point, power will be sent to the grid operator's converter station and transported to the mainland.
The Nordseecluster A has two separate grid connection points requiring two offshore substations, the statement said.
The project's second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add 900 MW more capacity. Foundations installation will start next year then in 2028, 60 Vestas turbines will be installed. The B phase will begin operations from early 2029, the statement said.
The entire project will generate about 6.5 terawatt hours of electricity each year.
The project is a joint project between 51% stakeholder RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management which holds 49%. RWE will remain responsible for construction and operation of the project over its lifetime.
