Cuba's national power grid suffered a total disconnection on Tuesday, marking the third nationwide blackout in just nine days, the Union Electrica confirmed on Tuesday.
The failure was triggered by a sudden frequency change following the shutdown of a major generating unit at the Felton 1 thermoelectric plant, according to the state-run Electric Union and the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
The blackout follows mounting fuel shortages exacerbated by a US oil blockade that has crippled the country's aging energy infrastructure.
Authorities have activated restoration protocols, attempting to establish "micro-islands" of power to provide priority service to essential facilities such as hospitals and food processing plants.
"This Wednesday, brigades from other provinces will arrive to join the work in the capital. There will be 15 additional brigades, which will add to those already operating, due to the high number of breakdowns occurring in Havana," the ministry said on social media.
