Fitch Ratings said it has affirmed Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank's long‑term issuer default rating at A‑ with a stable outlook, citing its strong credit profile and expected government support.
The bank's viability and support ratings are assessed at the group level of parent Sumitomo Mitsui Trust (TYO:8309), which benefits from Japan's stable operating environment and rising domestic interest rates, Fitch said.
Sumitomo Mitsui Trust's robust trust banking franchise, stable fee income, conservative risk management, and sound asset quality underpin its credit strength, according to the Monday statement.
Fitch expects operating profitability to remain around 1.4% through fiscal 2028, while the CET1 ratio may decline toward 10% by FY2029 as risk‑weighted assets rise under Basel III.
