Geothermal energy developer Fervo Energy has signed a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement with Google to support the continued development of its Cape Station enhanced geothermal system in southwestern Utah, Fervo said in a statement on Tuesday.
The GeoCluster project is expected to begin commercial operations in 2028. Under the agreement, Google will purchase carbon-free electricity intended to support a potential data center.
The agreement also gives Google an option to increase its power offtake by about 600 MW by June 2030, potentially bringing its total contracted capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt.
Plans for the potential data center remain subject to engineering feasibility, state and local approvals and commercial conditions.
The project is part of the expansion of Fervo's Cape Station development beyond its initial 100-MW phase. Fervo said it plans to scale the project through standardized, repeatable development of geothermal facilities, with the aim of reducing costs and expanding access to firm, around-the-clock electricity.
Google's partnership with Fervo began with Project Red, the company's commercial geothermal pilot project in Nevada, which came online in 2023 and supplies electricity to the local grid, including Google's data centers in the state.
In June 2024, Fervo signed a 115-MW power purchase agreement with Google and NV Energy. The deal helped establish Nevada's Clean Transition Tariff, under which Google can support additional geothermal generation while shielding other utility customers from the project's costs.
