Exchange-Traded Funds Mixed, US Equities Decline After Midday

Broad-market exchange-traded fund IWM fell and IVV edged higher. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) added 0.1%.

US equity indexes fell as strong macroeconomic data and higher crude oil prices boosted expectations for an October interest-rate increase, pushing government bond yields sharply higher.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each gained about 0.6%.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) slipped 0.2%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) rose fractionally, and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) added 0.2%.

The State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was down 0.1%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) was 0.1% higher.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) fell 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) declined 0.8%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), advanced 0.7%.

Commodities

Crude oil added 2.4%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 1.8%. Natural gas gained 6.9%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) moved 5.7% higher.

Gold on Comex slipped 0.2%, and the State Street SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was down 0.3%. Silver eased 1.2%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) dropped 1%.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) fell 0.3% and the Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) shed 0.3%.

The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was up fractionally. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) eased 0.5%, and the State Street SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) gained 0.1%.

Healthcare

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) added 0.5%, while iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) added 0.5% and 0.4%, respectively. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.2%.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) shed 0.3%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was down 0.2% and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) eased 0.3%.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) was 0.2% lower. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) declined 0.1%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) was up 0.1%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) fell fractionally.
