The Stoxx Europe fell 0.7%, the FTSE 100 lost 0.8%, France's CAC tumbled 1.7%, and the Swiss Market Index declined 1.1%, while Germany's DAX gained 0.3%.
In corporate news, BP is pressing the United Steelworkers to return to the bargaining table and agrees to federal mediation concerning the company's Whiting, Indiana refinery, according to a letter sent to union leaders dated Wednesday.
In the letter, Jordan Marcks, BP North America's head of People Relations, said the company remains committed to reaching a negotiated agreement that would allow employees to return to work.
United Steelworkers did not immediately respond to' requests for comment.
Shares of the British oil and gas major fell 1.5% in London.
HSBC is considering combining its major banking operations in Singapore under one entity as part of efforts to simplify its structure, Bloomberg News reported Thursday, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.
The British lender is looking to combine its wholesale, retail and private banking businesses in the country, according to the sources.
A spokesperson for HSBC told Bloomberg that the bank continues to review its organizational structure for "opportunities for simplification." HSBC didn't immediately respond to a request for comment by.
Shares of HSBC dropped 1.3% in London.
Novo Nordisk said Thursday that China's National Medical Products Administration has accepted its marketing application for the oral version of its weight-loss drug Wegovy, Reuters reported.
Reuters said NMPA's acceptance of the application is not approval to sell Novo Nordisk's once-daily semaglutide tablets to patients in China, but rather that officials have determined that the application is complete and may enter formal review.
According to the report, Novo Nordisk said its application to sell semaglutide tablets is based on its extensive phase 3 clinical research project. The weight-loss pills were approved for sale in US markets late last year.
Shares of the Danish pharmaceutical giant shed 3.2% in Copenhagen.
Unilever has hired Rothschild to market its 212-year-old Colman's mustard brand as it seeks to address potential competition concerns from the planned combination of its food business with McCormick, Sky News reported Thursday, citing a Unilever spokesperson and unnamed sources.
Rothschild has begun contacting potential buyers, though Colman's valuation remains unclear, the report said.
Shares of Unilever declined 0.6% in London.
AstraZeneca and Amgen said Thursday a phase 3 trial of Tezspire in eosinophilic esophagitis met the primary endpoints.
The medication met both primary endpoints by reducing tissue inflammation and easing swallowing difficulties at week 24 compared with placebo, the companies said. The improvements were maintained through week 52 for both tested doses, they said.
Shares of AstraZeneca were down 0.7% in London.
