European fuel prices rose sharply over the year in July, while monthly diesel and petrol prices also rebounded across much of the bloc, Eurostat said Friday.
Diesel prices rose 4.3% in July from June after falling 6.4% in June, while petrol prices increased 4.7% following a 4.2% decline in June, Eurostat said.
Fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport rose 16.9% over the year in July, following annual increases of 20.7% in May and 13.7% in June.
Prices increased in 25 of the 27 European Union countries over the year in July, while 13 countries recorded larger annual gains than in June, Eurostat said.
However, 24 countries posted slower annual price growth in July than in May, when 4 countries recorded annual increases of more than 30%, according to Eurostat.
Romania recorded the largest annual increase at 24.2%, followed by Germany and Lithuania at 22.9% each, Bulgaria at 22.2%, the Netherlands at 22% and Finland at 20.5%.
Hungary recorded a 0.1% decline, while Sweden and Ireland posted the smallest increases at 1.2% and 3.2%, respectively, according to Eurostat.
Diesel prices increased in 17 countries from June to July, led by Poland at 13.4%, Germany at 12.7% and Greece at 12.1%. Fuel prices fell in 9 countries, led by declines of 7.9% in Cyprus, 7.4% in Sweden and 6.4% in Ireland.
Petrol prices increased in 14 countries from June to July, led by Poland at 17.2%, Germany at 11.0% and Spain at 7.1%, Eurostat said.
Prices declined in 12 countries, with Sweden down 11.1%, Cyprus down 5.4%, and Ireland down 4.1%, according to Eurostat.
