The EU launched the Biomethane Mechanism, a new online portal under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform aimed at accelerating development of Europe's biomethane market, the European Commission said in a statement on Thursday.
It said the mechanism is voluntary, free of charge, and designed as a digital matchmaking and information tool for companies, investors, project developers, and public authorities. It is intended to scale up production and use of biomethane by improving market visibility and reducing fragmentation across EU member states.
Biomethane is a renewable gas produced by upgrading biogas generated from organic materials such as agricultural waste, food waste, sewage sludge, and manure.
The EC said the platform will connect buyers and suppliers, support project development, and increase transparency on regulatory conditions at both the national and EU levels. It will also provide links to financing opportunities available through regional, national, and EU funding channels.
The launch comes as the EU continues to seek ways to strengthen energy security amid geopolitical instability and volatility in global energy markets. The Commission argues that expanding domestic production of renewable, storable fuels such as biomethane can help reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels while supporting decarbonization goals.
EU officials say biomethane is already recognized as a low-carbon gas that can contribute to energy security, industrial competitiveness, and emissions reductions. While production technology is mature and suitable feedstocks are widely available, output remains concentrated in a limited number of member states, leaving significant untapped potential.
The Biomethane Mechanism is intended to address those gaps by improving market coordination and reducing information asymmetries. Planned features include a buyer-supplier matching function, a regulatory dashboard with updated national frameworks, tools to assess investment conditions, and structured links to financing sources.
Registrations for the platform opened with the launch, and the first matchmaking round is scheduled for September, with additional features expected to be introduced in phases.
