A consortium led by France's EDF, OQ Alternative Energy and Al Khadra Partners has reached financial close on a 120-megawatt wind power project in Oman, the companies said on Tuesday.
The Jaalan Bani Bu Ali project is set to be one of the Gulf state's largest onshore wind farms. It has a 20-year power purchase agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company, Oman's state-owned electricity procurement entity.
The consortium said that the wind farm will comprise 16 turbines, each with a capacity of 7.7 MW, and is expected to generate enough electricity to supply more than 13,500 houses per year. It is also expected to avoid over 270,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The project comes as Oman seeks to increase renewable energy's contribution to its electricity mix to at least 30% by 2030 as part of its Oman Vision 2040 strategy and its goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
The JBB project adds to a growing pipeline of solar and wind developments as Oman seeks to diversify its electricity generation and capitalize on its strong renewable resources.
