E.ON has agreed to acquire UK energy supplier OVO, a deal that is expected to expand its retail customer base in one of Europe's largest energy markets, the company said Monday.
The German utility firm, which already supplies about 5.6 million customers in the UK, expects the addition of OVO's four million customers to strengthen its position in the country and support the development of digital and flexible energy services.
The company did not disclose financial details of the transaction. The deal, which is subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to close in H2 2026. E.ON's UK arm, E.ON Next, and OVO will continue to operate as legally and operationally independent entities until the deal closes.
E.ON said the combined business would benefit from a high level of digitalization, with about seven million smart meters installed across both companies. More than 60% of their UK customers are connected through fully digital systems, providing a foundation for further innovation in electricity, heating and e-mobility services.
The company said it plans to expand digital energy solutions, including smart tariffs and flexibility offerings, across Europe, including Germany and other continental markets. E.ON currently offers about 100 different energy solutions in the UK and said demand for flexible energy usage continues to grow.
