Drax Supplied 6% of UK's Power During H1 2026, Targets 7.4 GW Managed Portfolio by 2029

By

UK-based energy company, Drax Group supplied 6% of the UK's electricity and 10% of its renewable power during H1, its results showed, compared to 5% and 11% during the corresponding period a year ago.

Drax's generation portfolio produced a total of 7.3 terawatt-hours of electricity during the first half of 2026, slightly below 7.4 TWh a year earlier. Biomass led the way with 7.0 TWh of total output, while pumped storage and hydro contributed 0.3 TWh.

During the period, Drax also commissioned its first open-cycle gas turbine in Wales, adding approximately 300 megawatts of generating capacity.

The company further reported progress on its 440-MW Cruachan pumped-storage hydro facility, where turbine upgrade works continued, while it continued to resolve grid access restrictions.

Portfolio under management, which constitutes energy assets managed and operated by the company, has risen from 4 GW across four generation sites in 2025, to 6.1 GW spanning more than 200 sites this year. The company plans to hit 7.4 GW by 2029.
