Exelon (EXC) unit Commonwealth Edison said on Sunday it has reached 99% power restoration rate across northern Illinois following multiple rounds of severe storms and tornadoes that triggered over 674,600 customer outages.
Infrastructure damage was the most extensive the utility has faced since the 2020 derecho, requiring round-the-clock reconstruction of core localized distribution networks.
Field crews were forced to completely replace nearly 500 broken utility poles and string more than 295,000 feet of new cable wire after uprooted trees downed heavy spans, it said.
While a subsequent band of isolated Saturday night thunderstorms added an extra 6,425 localized outages, the high-density restoration was largely completed by the end of the weekend, the company added.
According to ComEd Executive Vice President David Perez, field technicians remain deployed to clear the final pockets of isolated outages.
Total grid normalization is anticipated within the next 24 hours as crews complete low-voltage drop repairs to individual structures and localized circuits.
