Chinese shares opened lower on Tuesday amid market unease stemming from a sweeping new U.S. sanctions campaign against Iran.
The Shanghai Composite Index, the main gauge of Chinese stocks, opened 0.5% lower at 3,863.37. The Shenzhen Component Index declined 0.8% to 13,683.91.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced "Operation Economic Outcast," a new campaign to economically isolate Iran, CBS reported. The move expands secondary sanctions on those trading with Iran and slaps new restrictions on key sectors, including digital assets, gold, aviation, technology, and shipping.
Bessent said Chinese companies and banks backing Iran-linked deals will face sanctions, ramping up economic pressure on Tehran and turning up the heat on China-Iran financial ties, CNBC reported.
