Chinese shares opened lower Thursday despite an agreement to extend the U.S.-China trade truce.
The Shanghai Composite Index, the main gauge of Chinese stocks, opened 0.2% lower at 3,925.32. The Shenzhen Component Index declined 0.4% to 13,575.07.
Investors remained cautious despite U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's statement that Washington and Beijing agreed to extend the trade truce through Jan. 10, 2027, from Nov. 10.
The announcement came as U.S. President Donald Trump personally greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, the first time in 11 years a U.S. president has welcomed a foreign leader at a military base.
