China Shares Open Lower as Hormuz Reopening Prospects Dim

Chinese shares opened lower on Tuesday amid dimming prospects for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Shanghai Composite Index, the main gauge of Chinese stocks, opened 0.4% lower to 3,950.71. The Shenzhen Component Index declined 0.4% to 14,266.44.

Compensation disputes between Iran and the U.S. have dampened hopes for a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran demanded sanctions relief and other concessions from Washington, while U.S. President Donald Trump insisted that Tehran compensate all those killed and wounded in Iranian attacks.

Tadawul Shares Start Week Subdued; Saudi's Business Sentiment Remains Optimistic in July

The Tadawul All Share Index started the week muted at 0.05% in the green on Sunday as investors assessed Saudi Arabia's latest economic data and earnings updates.According to a report by the kingdom's General Authority for Statistics, the business confidence index in July came in at 56.5 points, slightly easing from 56.6 in the prior month. Data showed that the separate industry, construction, and services confidence indices all decreased during the period."The index reflects prevailing optimism in the business sector, supported by establishments' confidence in the stability of economic activity and continued growth across various sectors," the report said. "During July 2026, the BCI for the industry sector recorded an optimistic level of 54.7 points, despite a decline of 0.2 points compared to June 2026, when it reached 55.0 points. This decrease is attributed to a decline in confidence levels among industrial establishments, particularly in current input costs and their expectations regarding them for the coming month."Speaking of economic releases, the week will also see the release of Saudi Arabia's June industrial production data on Monday and its July inflation print on Thursday.Back at home, Obeikan Glass (SASE:4145), Shalfa Facilities Management (SASE:9613), and Saudi Manpower Solutions (SASE:1834), d/b/a Smasco, reported higher net profit and revenue for the first half of 2026. Miahona Co. (SASE:2084), on the other hand, logged a 90.74% decline in attributable net profit and a 35.36% decrease in revenue for the six months ended June 30.Obeikan and Shalfa closed 0.29% and 3.39% in the green, while Smasco and Miahona were 0.78% and 2.62% in the red.Meanwhile, Scientific and Medical Equipment House (SASE:4014) shares ticked up 0.29% as it secured a contract to provide medical operations and medical equipment maintenance services for the Security Aviation Leadership.

US Equity Indexes Rise This Week as Technology Mega-Caps Advance, Hormuz Reopening Deal in Works

US equity indexes jumped this week amid gains in technology heavyweights and growing expectations of a deal between Iran and Oman that will pave the way for a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint for about a fifth of global crude oil and natural gas flows.* The S&P 500 closed at 7,757.64 on Friday versus 7,494.08 a week ago. The Nasdaq Composite stood at 26,690.62, compared with 25,367.02 a week earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended at 54,036.93, versus 52,535.02 at the end of last week.* Basic materials, technology, and industrials led gainers this week, while energy was the steepest decliner.* Among companies with a market capitalization of more than $200 billion, nine of the top 10 outperformers this week were from the technology sector, according to data compiled by Finviz. The top gainer in this category was Palantir (PLTR) after Q2 sales and adjusted earnings surpassed analysts' estimates and the company boosted its full-year 2026 revenue outlook.* Nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000 in July, marking the first decline since February, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday. The consensus was for an 80,000 increase in July, according to a Bloomberg-compiled survey.* The probability of the Federal Reserve keeping its target rate unchanged at 3.5%-3.75% in September surged to 56% on Friday from 45% a day ago and 33% a week ago, according to the CME FedWatch tool.* Iranian lawmakers debated the wording of a proposed deal with Oman on the Strait of Hormuz, Bloomberg reported. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said earlier this week that an understanding with Oman had been reached "in principle," and state TV cited one lawmaker on Friday as saying the final text and details of an agreement with Muscat will be announced "soon."* The front-month West Texas Intermediate crude oil traded at $76.85 late Friday, down from roughly $84.67 a week ago.
