China is betting big on green hydrogen, the kind produced exclusively using renewable energy, a play that could be decisive to the fate of the fledgling energy source as it struggles to take off elsewhere, research division BloombergNEF reported on Thursday.
The country has increased production since late 2024 to almost 250,000 tons, BloombergNEF said, while China's latest five-year plan seeks to increase that to 2 million tons by the end of the decade.
China's surplus renewable energy that can be stored as hydrogen, preserving the economics of renewable investments, and a huge industrial base awaiting decarbonization, leave the country well placed to develop both supply and demand.
The article discusses the fact that China could be pivotal to green hydrogen's fortunes as some other countries scale back their plans for it over cost, lack of production and logistics infrastructure and a lack of certainty over demand given the investments required in end-use sectors like shipping and steel.
