Oil prices continued to edge lower Friday even after the US warned that its blockade of Iranian ports could remain in place for an extended period and two United Arab Emirates tankers were attacked by drones while transiting the Strait of Hormuz Thursday evening.
West Texas Intermediate September crude oil futures, the US benchmark, fell 0.2% to $81.07 per barrel. Brent futures, the international benchmark, fell 0.02% to $87.05 a barrel for October delivery.
Comex gold for December delivery climbed 0.6% to $4,447.50 an ounce.
US retail sales fell 0.6% month on month in July to $763.6 billion, as consumers cut back on purchases, the US Census Bureau reported this morning. The lower sales also boosted the case for a pause on any interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.
In agricultural commodities, December wheat futures advanced 2.4% to $6.84 per bushel. November canola futures rose 1.3% to C$813.50 per tonne.
