BHP Group (ASX:BHP) said Tuesday the government of New South Wales proposed that its Mt Arthur coal mine land be rezoned to allow for other uses besides mining under the Mt. Arthur Coal Mine Transformation Precinct Master Plan.
The company said in a statement that around 5,400 hectares of land could potentially be rezoned, and around 950 hectares of land within the mine's footprint would be prioritized for "early activation."
The master plan would provide a range of future uses of the site's infrastructure once BHP stops mining, per the statement.
