AMD to Invest Up to $5 Billion in Claude Maker Anthropic; Companies Sign Chip Partnership

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) committed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while the companies entered into a strategic partnership covering AMD chips.

AMD will make the investment in the Amazon.com-backed (AMZN) artificial intelligence firm "in the future," the companies said Wednesday.

The strategic partnership covers the deployment of up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 series graphics processor units in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions, with initial deployment starting in the first half of next year. Anthropic is already using AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, according to a joint statement.

"We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale," AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su said. "This collaboration brings together Anthropic's leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing."

AMD shares were up 1.8% in Wednesday late-afternoon trade, bringing its year-to-date gains to about 159%.

"By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude," Anthropic Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown said.

The companies are also launching a multiyear engineering collaboration under which teams will use Claude to optimize workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate ROCm software development. ROCm is an open-source software stack designed for GPU computation.

AMD will "broadly adopt" Claude across its engineering and product development teams, the companies said.

Earlier this year, Anthropic expanded its partnership with existing backer Amazon, which said at the time it was investing another $5 billion in the Claude maker, with up to an additional $20 billion in the future. The AI company confidentially filed for an initial public offering in the US earlier in 2026.

The Anthropic collaboration marks the latest deal for AMD, which earlier this week announced an expanded strategic partnership spanning its GPUs, central processing units, networking and software on Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure cloud-computing platform.

AMD is scheduled to report its fiscal second-quarter results Aug. 4.

The increase was mainly driven by a 54% jump in exports and an 11% increase in domestic sales.The upbeat performance was also boosted by the first full-quarter consolidation of Bajaj Mobility AG, the Austria-based parent of European premium motorcycles manufacturer KTM Group.During an earnings call, Bajaj Auto's Joint Managing Director Rakesh Sharma acknowledged that the company delivered its "highest quarterly performance across all parameters.""We are looking at moving exports to beyond the 250,000 per month level this quarter and onwards. As you will recall, we were just a few quarters earlier trying to knock at 200,000," Sharma said.The company's record figures came despite inflationary pressures."The commodity inflation we absorbed in this single quarter was greater than the totality of the inflation that we've experienced over the previous two financial years put together," Bajaj Auto CFO Dinesh Thapar told analysts during the earnings call."That, I believe, gives you a sense of the sheer intensity and enormity of the issue that we were faced with on the cost environment."Thapar added that pricing actions taken in April and June offset nearly half of the inflationary hit.In June, India's producer price inflation accelerated to an all-time high of 9.57%.Looking ahead, Bajaj said it plans an "exhaustive portfolio makeover" within the next six weeks, including introducing a new 150cc and 125cc under the Pulsar brand.

The probe will examine subsidies, tax breaks, permits, environmental exemptions and publicly funded infrastructure provided for the Chinese automaker.Magyar alleged that Szijjártó helped BYD expand in Hungary with "hundreds of billions" of forints in public funding, diplomatic backing and state infrastructure while in office."We will examine all the decisions, negotiations and state commitments made by Péter Szijjártó that were related to the BYD Hungary investment," the Associated Press quoted Magyar as saying. A month later, BYD also unveiled a 75.7 million-euro investment to expand its electric bus factory in Komárom to manufacture electric trucks.BYD's first passenger vehicle plant on the European continent is also being built in Hungary, as announced in 2023. BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li told Reuters in June 2026 that the facility will start production within the year, which is about a year later than expected."Hungary is the number one priority right now," Li told the news outlet then.
