Amazon's Zoox Reportedly Pulls Robotaxi Software Over Smoke-Detection Failure

By

Amazon.com's (AMZN) Zoox recalled software in 105 of its robotaxis after the company determined one vehicle failed to detect heavy smoke and entered an emergency fire scene, multiple news outlets reported Friday.

Zoox told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on July 8 that it identified the issue after a June 20 incident in Las Vegas, when an unoccupied robotaxi drove into smoke that obscured an active fire response before braking sharply and stopping, CNBC reported.

The safety administration said in a letter to autonomous vehicle companies that multiple instances of robotaxis driving into active emergency scenes have been documented, Reuters reported.

Vehicles "blocked the paths of ambulances and firefighters, or failed to recognize and respond to basic safety conditions like flashing lights, flares, smoke, fire, and traffic cones," Jonathan Morrison, the agency's administrator, said in a July 8 letter.
