Amazon Leo, Herotel to Launch Satellite Internet Service in South Africa in 2027

By

Amazon.com (AMZN) said its satellite broadband network, Amazon Leo, agreed with Herotel, a South African internet service provider, to launch a satellite service called evry in 2027 for households, small businesses and rural areas.

Herotel serves more than 350,000 customers across 550 towns through fiber and fixed wireless networks, and its existing infrastructure will support evry, Amazon said Wednesday in a statement.

"The agreement addresses a persistent challenge: millions of South Africans living on farms, in small towns, and in rural communities still lack reliable internet because distance, terrain, and low population density make traditional infrastructure impractical and costly," the statement said.

Financial details weren't disclosed.
