Aeon Mall (TYO:8905) said Wednesday it is fully cooperating with relevant authorities and providing support to those affected by the Kumamoto earthquake in Japan on Tuesday.
In an emailed statement to, the Aeon Mall Kumamoto owner confirmed an explosion incident at the property after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the prefecture.
Japan government spokesperson Minoru Kihara was quoted by Reuters as saying Wednesday that an investigation is underway over a possible gas explosion at the mall after rescuers reported smelling gas inside the property.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the company reported three fatalities, five injuries, one cardiac arrest, and three who are still unaccounted for. Around 2,700 employees of specialty stores at the mall were safe.
