South Dakota had the lowest rate at 2.3%, while Washington DC had the highest at 6.3%.
The national unemployment rate was reported at 4.3% in March, down from 4.4% in February.
Nonfarm payrolls rose in three states and were little changed elsewhere. Nationwide nonfarm payrolls increased by 178,000 in March after a 133,000 decline in February.
The largest payrolls gain in absolute terms was in Texas, which added 46,800 jobs, followed by Florida with 28,100.
