First-Quarter Economic Growth Trails Expectations as Consumer Spending Slows

US economic growth fell short of Wall Street's expectations in the first quarter as spending slowed amid inflationary pressures that economists said will likely keep consumers under pressure.Real gross domestic product in the world's largest economy rose at an annual rate of 2% in the March quarter, according to an advance estimate released Thursday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The consensus was for a 2.3% gain in a survey compiled by Bloomberg. In the previous quarter, real GDP edged up 0.5%.Consumer spending growth eased to 1.6% in the first quarter from 1.9% in the previous three-month period, but topped Wall Street's views for a 1.4% rise. Outlays on nondurable goods swung into negative territory while those on services decelerated, the data showed."The core of the economy remained solid in (the first quarter), driven by the (artificial intelligence) buildout and the tax cuts beginning to feed through," Oxford Economics Chief US Economist Michael Pearce said in remarks emailed to. "Those factors will continue to drive growth over the rest of the year, but the jump in energy prices will take some of the shine off what would otherwise have been a strong year for the economy."Energy prices have soared following the US-Israel war with Iran that has left the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed. The conflict paused following a recent ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, but a framework for a permanent truce is yet to be reached."If inflation pressures continue to build in the months ahead, it will be more and more difficult for consumers to keep up," BMO Chief US Economist Scott Anderson said in a report.Private investment growth accelerated to 8.7% from 2.3% on a sequential basis, BEA data showed. Exports and imports turned positive. The personal consumption expenditures price index rose 4.5% in the March quarter, compared with a 2.9% gain in the previous three-month period. Excluding food and energy prices, the index accelerated to 4.3% from 2.7%.The BEA said in a separate report Thursday that US inflation registered its fastest pace since mid-2022 in March."Higher energy prices were also behind the jump in inflation in March and will push headline inflation close to 4% in the months ahead," according to Pearce. "The more worrying trend for the Federal Reserve is signs of stronger electronics inflation due to rampant AI demand and passthrough from energy prices to core prices, which will keep core PCE inflation sticky at close to 3% this year."The Fed kept its benchmark lending rate steady on Wednesday, saying the Middle East conflict is fueling uncertainty around the US economic outlook.

Research Alert: CFRA Maintains Hold Opinion On Shares Of Caesars Entertainment

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We raise our 12-month price target by $4 to $29, based on 8.1x our 2026 adjusted EBITDA estimate, slightly below the company's three-year average forward P/E multiple of 8.4x. We maintain our 2026 and 2027 EPS estimates of ($0.25) and ($0.15), respectively. CZR reported Q1 2026 results that showed modest improvement across key metrics, with total net revenues increasing to $2.87B (+2.7% Y/Y) and net loss narrowing to $98M from $115M in the prior year. The company's adjusted EBITDA remained essentially flat at $887M (+0.3% Y/Y), reflecting mixed segment performance despite overall revenue growth. Caesars Digital delivered standout performance with record Q1 results, generating revenues of $374M (+11.6% Y/Y) and adjusted EBITDA of $69M (+60.5% Y/Y). This segment continues to be the primary growth driver for the company, with management highlighting the strong momentum in the digital betting and iGaming platform. We remain neutral and see the valuation as fair at 8x consensus EBITDA estimates for 2026.

Research Alert: CFRA Reiterates Strong Buy Opinion On Shares Of Lithia Motors Inc.

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We lower our 12-month target by $25 to $375, based on a 2027 P/E of 9.0x, a modest discount to LAD's 10-year forward P/E of 10.3x. We reduce our adjusted EPS estimates to $35.30 from $39.25 for '26 and to $41.80 from $43.20 for '27. Following LAD's Q1 earnings beat, we are lowering our estimates and price target but reiterating our Strong Buy on the shares. LAD remains our top pick in auto retail, as the company continues to outperform in a more challenging environment for dealerships. LAD's same-store-sales growth is outperforming peers by a wide margin and its combination of aggressive share repurchases and accretive acquisitions is helping support its bottom line. Impressively, LAD bought back ~4% of total outstanding shares in Q1 after retiring 11% of its share count in 2025. We find LAD's current risk/reward compelling with significant upside potential in a more favorable demand environment, continuing to view the long-term growth story as intact and noting management's history of solid execution.
