China Shenhua Energy's Coal Sales Rise in March, Output Slips

-- China Shenhua Energy's (SHA:601088, HKG:1088) coal sales jumped 6.4% to 36.8 million tons in March from 34.6 million tons in the year-ago period, according to a Thursday filing with the Hong Kong bourse.

Commercial coal production fell 4.8% to 28 million tons from 29.4 million tons in the prior-year period.

Power output increased 16% to 18.9 billion kilowatt-hours from 16.3 billion kilowatt-hours, while gross power generation also climbed 16% year over year to 20.1 billion kilowatt-hours from 17.3 billion kilowatt-hours.

In the first quarter of 2026, coal sales jumped 3.9% to 103.2 million tons year over year, while production slipped 2.4% to 80.5 million tons.

Energy stocks were higher Tuesday afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index rising 1.1% and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) adding 1.2%.The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index was climbing 1.8%, while the Dow Jones US Utilities Index fell 1.3%.Front-month West Texas Intermediate crude oil was rising 4.8% to $93.94 a barrel, and the global benchmark Brent crude contract was advancing 4.4% to $99.68 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures increased 0.3% to $2.70 per 1 million BTU.In corporate news, Halliburton (HAL) shares gained 4.1% after it reported lower Q1 adjusted net income and revenue that still topped analysts' expectations.
